We are so excited to introduce you to Anna Bentley!
Anna is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) at PediaPlex and has worked here for 2 years.
Why Anna Became a BCBA
We asked Anna why she wanted to become a BCBA…
“My older son was diagnosed with autism when he was two, and it completely changed my life. I remember noticing signs that his development was off and no one was taking me seriously. I remember the feeling when he was first diagnosed and not really knowing what to do or how to get help. I never want anyone to have that feeling of helplessness about their child’s future.
Eventually, we were so fortunate to find excellent therapists and educators to help my son. Their compassion and skill and patience (mostly with me and my endless questions) was a huge inspiration to me. I was a stay at home mom when my kids were young and I remember feeling extremely isolated. I started a support group. We lived in Oklahoma at the time and I started helping with other families who were struggling with an autism diagnosis and trying to figure out what to do. I realized how much I not only loved being around kids but loved helping those families.
As my kids got older, I decided to change careers and to work with kids with autism and their families. I chose ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) because it is the most effective, research-based treatment for children with autism. I went back to school and got my Masters, and earned my BCBA certification.“
Taking Charge As a BCBA In ABA Therapy
You’re probably wondering- what the heck is a BCBA? Well, a BCBA is a practitioner in charge of ABA treatment for a client. They develop treatment plans to increase communication, social and adaptive skills and reduce challenging behaviors. BCBAs conduct evaluations and assessments, develop individualized treatment plans and behavior intervention plans. BCBAs can also supervise direct therapy staff (behavior technicians) who implement the interventions and provide parent training to make sure the skills learned in therapy transfer to other environments.
What Keeps This BCBA Happy
When Anna isn’t at PediaPlex, you can find her hanging out with her husband, their two kids, and their two cats. A fun fact about Anna is that she used to be a TV news producer! Talk about a career change!
