The Importance of Keeping a Positive Outlook in the Face of Disability

The Importance of Keeping a Positive Outlook in the Face of Disability

It can be life-changing for families to receive a diagnosis that their child has a disability, whether it be physical, mental, learning, developmental, or otherwise. Every parent wants the best for their child and may wonder what a diagnosis means for their child’s future. It is important to keep a positive outlook and an open mind. Focusing on something you can’t change does nothing to help – but focusing on the opportunities and potential that lie ahead can make a difference.

Remember – no one knows exactly what your child is capable of.

Every child is different. As the old cliché goes, “If you’ve met one child with autism, you’ve met one child with autism.” The same can be said for so many disabilities. Many of them fall on a spectrum and have many contributing factors. There is no way of knowing exactly how your child may be affected or what the limits of their capabilities are. So, go in believing that they are limitless. Continually support their efforts and encourage them to keep trying.

Stay positive. Whether you realize it or not, your child is always observing you and the environment around them. They can sense when you’re happy, upset, frustrated, excited, etc. If you have doubts in their abilities, they may have doubts in their abilities. Reassure them that they are loved, accepted, and valued just the way they are. Build a network of support for yourself also as you support your child. You can learn a lot from others who have been in similar situations.

You can’t change your child’s diagnosis, but you can help them to live their best life. Make connections, explore resources, and work together with others to give your child every opportunity to succeed.

Celebrate the small achievements and recognize that every child develops at their own pace. PediaPlex works with families to not only determine diagnoses, but to implement appropriate therapies and services to help children thrive, build their independence, and overcome challenges.
