Speech-Language Pathologist


 

Primary Purpose:

Conduct assessments that will identify the presence of a communication disorder, including specific impairments in articulation, language, voice, and fluency skills. Provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce impairments that interfere with clients’ abilities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA) or TEA certificate in speech therapy
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) issued from ASHA or may be completing a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Skill in the use of tests and measurements for assessing communication disorders
  • Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions; Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Assessment & Therapy

  • Develop Plans of Care that support assessment results including appropriate long term and short term goals and objectives.
  • Plan and provide appropriate individual therapy to clients consistent with speech and language goals
  • Evaluate client progress and determine ongoing need for therapy services.
  • Conduct individual evaluations to assess clients with speech or language disorders and determine eligibility for services.
  • Develop clinical management strategies or procedures and diagnostic statements by interpreting observations or data.
  • Participate in conferences with parents and guardians to assist in interpretation of assessment data and goal setting for clients with communication disorders.

Clinic Climate & Improvement

  • Present a positive role model for clients through interactions and presentation.
  • Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to plan and implement therapeutic activities to improve communication skills of clients.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the client.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of speech-language pathology services and make changes based on the findings. Apply continuous improvement strategies to assessment and therapy practices.

Client Management

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity and developmental levels and interests of clients.
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, clients, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of clients.

Program Management

  • May supervise licensed speech-language pathology assistants and graduate students at the discretion and appointment of the Clinic Director.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents in a timely fashion adhering to guidelines and requests.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

  • Demonstrate the ability to self-initiate tasks and projects that will benefit clients as well as the staff and clinic.
  • Complete Community Support Events in order to participate in community outreach events that benefit our clients, help educate the general public and connect the general public to services.
  • Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
