Update on Megan: Watching her Thrive

Raising a child with special needs can be difficult. You are continually left wondering what the future will hold. You want to give your child the world and support them in becoming as independent and self-sufficient as possible. With the right support and patience, your child can succeed, as Sonia’s daughter Megan has demonstrated time and time again.

Megan was only 8 years old when she was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyspraxia. While it was a relief to have a diagnosis, Sonia was faced with how to effectively help her daughter. Megan engaged in years of occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, counseling and finding the right medications. She attended the Hill School of Fort Worth and her family established a very structured routine at home. Megan also recently started wearing a hearing aid to help with hearing loss.

Having such a solid support system has paid off and helped her to thrive. Not only has Megan conquered learning how to drive, she works at Kincaid’s Hamburgers in Southlake. Her manager provided her with the encouragement and support she needed to succeed. She will be graduating high school in May and has thrived in this regard as well. She was inducted into the National Honor Society, had her poetry published, was crowned Homecoming Princess, attended prom and has gone out on a few dates along the way. While these may seem like normal teenage activities, for Megan, they are huge accomplishments.

However, Megan’s journey is not over yet. She has exciting things planned for the future. In the fall, she will be starting college at Parker University where she will study Occupational Therapy. While she is in school, she will be helping other children with autism spectrum disorders by working as a Behavior Therapist at PediaPlex.

Megan has grown leaps and bounds over the years and continues to thrive. If you are looking for the right combination of therapies to support your child in reaching their potential, fill out an intake form for PediaPlex and learn more about how we can help.
